Summer is the perfect time to plant alpines

Summer is the ideal time for planting up troughs, raised beds and rockeries. The soil is warm and the roots get going quickly, meaning that the plants get well established before the cooler months approach. There is a common misconception that alpines are just for the spring, whereas in fact we probably have as many plants flowering in the summer months as we do in spring. Not all are tiny cushions either... the frosted blue flowers of Eryngium 'ex Oxford Blue' make a really good display, along with Dierama igneum (a dwarf Angel's Fishing rod).  Sisyrinchiums such as EK Balls flower all summer long and many of the stunning silver foliage saxifraga are now in full bloom. And Gladiolus flanaganii adds height and drama to any alpine display - being totally hardy even in our wet Pennine winters.

If it is cute little cushions that you're after we specialise in those and have a huge variety to choose from - browse our alphabetical list or filter the search by clicking on 'crevice' or 'container' on the panel on the left side of the Plants page.
